The IJsselmeer, full of history
The IJsselmeer (meer = lake), formerly the Zuiderzee (South Sea) before the 30 km long Afsluitdijk was completed in the 1930's cutting it off from the North Sea and turning it into a fresh water lake.
The sailing heritage however continues to flourish and the centuries old harbours retain their character and hospitality.
Famous harbours are: Amsterdam, Enkhuizen, Volendam, Marken, Stavoren.

- Cross the Afsluitdijk through one of the locks
